1990 Honda Accord makes 'crackling' noise when accelerating

I have a 1990 Honda Accord that has recently started making noise underneath when accelerating. Hard to describe, but it sounds like a crackling or like rocks bouncing through the exhaust. Can't exactly tell where it comes from but almost like around the oil pan or exhaust pipe.
Also noticed a couple mpg drop in gas milage.
Any ideas or suggestions??
Thanks,

It could be that your cat is dead, and material from it has become dislodged and is bouncing around inside and being slowly burnt up. I'd check that as henrymv suggested.
Also as far as the drop in mpg, check your air filter, tire pressure, fuel filter, spark plugs...

Check the sheild that goes around the converter. It has a top and bottom that mounts together by bolts I think.

Had a CRX that made the same noise and it was the sheild that was loose or missing a bolt. If I remember correct I tried to fix it and ended up taking it off (I think??). Been many moons ago & I don't remember exactly what I did but do know THAT was the problem.

Thats just on there in case you park over something flamable that can catch fire like leaves or something.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I checked the catalytic converter and had rocks in between that and the shield. I got the rocks out and that quieted it down some, but when I shook it hard, it sounds like whatever is inside the converter is all loose.
Wheres the best place to get a new one and what kind of price tag am I looking at for parts and labor?
Thanks.

Here's what seems to be some fair deals.
