Stereo wont turn on after changing ciggarette lighter fuse.. HELP?!
Ok, so heres the story.
I got a 1997 GTI 4cyl. About 2 weeks ago i plugged an *unnamed device* into the ciggarette lighter. it blew the fuse. The fuse that blew is one of the 4 that are above the relays. Now, everything went ok with the lighter. i changed the fuse, it works. blah blah blah well, now.. my aftermarket stereo doesnt work. I fiddled with the relay's and i think one that is labelled "110" is blown. its in the #10 spot on the relay panel. #9 on the relay panel is the windsheild wiper medium speed and time delay. when i move the wiper delay relay (#9) to where the #10 spot. the car stereo works fine. turns on in accessory position. Now here is where i'm baffled. with the wiper relay in the wrong spot. the stereo works. i decided to go out and buy a new relay for the one that seemed dead. adn well. moving all the relays back into place, stereo is still dead. has anyone had this problem before, or does anyone know where i can find a diagram of the relay panel, so i know where everything goes. i *may* have accidentally moved a relay into the wrong spot, and since a bunch are interchangable (in slot location) i may have put something back wrong. If someone with a gti in the year 1997 or near, could maybe go to their car and write down the locations of where all the relays go along the 12 slots it'd be greatly appreciated. i've spent a lot of time on such a simple issue so far, any help would be very good! thanks. Re: Stereo wont turn on after changing ciggarette lighter fuse.. HELP?!
The row of relays closest to the fuses (lower) is #7-12 left to right, the next row up is #1-6. Wiper relay would be position #8, the signal flasher relay is #6. Now, which # relay are you saying makes the radio work? It actually sounds like another fuse is blown.

Re: Stereo wont turn on after changing ciggarette lighter fuse.. HELP?!
Ya, i did some more investigation. Relay #6 is the turn signal, 7 is blank, 8 is the wiper delay and medium speed. #9 is what i'm looking for
i cant get the wires leading to my stereo to provide power unless i put the wiper delay relay into #9. what is supposed to go into #9? part number would be helpful i called a dealership and they say the problem should be the ignition relay located in sport 21. BUT. my car has the 2 rows, plus 3 others, which are connected on top of the other relays... so i think they looked up the wrong car. 1997 GTI 4cyl. |

Re: Stereo wont turn on after changing ciggarette lighter fuse.. HELP?!
#9 is the seat belt warning relat, someone probably pulled it because they were tired of hearing the chime. It may be in the wrong place, look for the one with the little speaker grill on it. There is a spot identified as #21, it's the top row of those add on relays, third from the left. I think that actually is a hidden fuse position for the radio though.

Re: Stereo wont turn on after changing ciggarette lighter fuse.. HELP?!
Thats what i thought #9 was for. i looked at a friends car, and it seems i do have everything in the right place. mind you, when i got my car, i did remove the seat belt warning. now, i guess my question is, how, after 2 years of having the car, did this suddenly die.
I dont feel super comfortable taking the entire fuse panel out. and in my car, i have 2 rows of 6 relays 1-6 7-12 on top of those, theres 3 other relays. there is no set position for them, they seem added on. and 4 normal car fuses, one which was for the car lighter that i replaced theres no numbers pointing to what these last 3 relays do. and i've unplugged them all, car off/on and cant seem to find out what they do.. anyone have any clue? |

Re: Stereo wont turn on after changing ciggarette lighter fuse.. HELP?!
Those clipped on relays are/were located in positions so they can be identified. The top row of the main panel is labeled #1-#6, any relays attached above this row would be #13-#18 and any attached on top of them would be #19-#24. Note they don't have to be relays, but can be fuse holders. That's how VW was talking about position #21, officially it should be clipped on a second row above #3.
