Help, 1994 Cherokee clickins sound and
HI, I have two problems. First there is a clicking sound coming from my right front axle, whatever it's called. Sorry I'm damn car retarded. Wish I had time to learn in detail. Also the belt at the front when I open the hood is making a slight griding clanking sound as it rotates which has gotten worse. Any suggestions?

Re: Help, 1994 Cherokee clickins sound and
the clicking at your right front axle is possibly the CV joint. Check that the boot is still intact. If it is, there is still a possibility that it is the cause but will need more info about when it makes the noise such as speed and direction of travel (ie turning either direction). Does lightly applying the brakes affect the noise??
The noise under the hood is likely the idler/tensioner pully bearing if you have a single belt driving all the accessories. not that expensive or hard to replace. JD |

Hi thanks, the clicking sound happens intermittingly, driving straight or turning. Sometimes I wont hear it for a week, then it will sound for a day or two then disappear again. Braking only affects the noise once I come to a full stop, as I slow down so does the clicking. 1 click per rotation it sounds like.
How long can I ignore these problems b4 I have real trouble? |

If it is the CV joint you hear clicking (and it sure looks that) then you need to get it replaced as soon as you can. If you let them go like this they fail and you will lose the ability to stear (sp?) which is a bad thing :-)
I had one break on me when I was a young driver. Thank goodness the streets were empty and I was pulling out of a parking lot. The car just circled to the shoulder where I stopped and called a tow truck as I could no longer move the front wheels! I learned about CV joints shortly thereafter!

Thanks, just spoke with the garage, the serpentine belt is cracking, going to be replaced. They haven't looked at the clicking yet.

Re: Help, 1994 Cherokee clickins sound and
Ok, I need some clarification, you all are mentioning a CV jiont(Constant Velocity) in a XJ. Does this really exist or am I miss understanding the lingo. A CV joint to me is a sealed joint at the end of an axle shaft with a ribbed rubber boot holding in the lubricant. An Axle Universal Jiont has a typical universal joint in it, the kind that you find in most driveshafts. Which by the way I have seen in most XJ's including mine. Do they make an upgrade to a CV joint, (at least to my understanding of what one is)?
Oh by the way 1234, it sounds like your Axle joint is failing you, I did it my self and it cost me just $40 to have the jionts removed and pressed into the axles. Not too hard if you have a set of 1/2 tools. |
