Question 1990 5 speed Honda Accord EX Error codes

I have a 1990 5 speed Honda Accord EX and actually experience a problem: the engine stumbles when accelerating and periodically the "check engine" light goes on. The "check engine" light goes off when I cycle the ignition (turn it off then on). Eventually it will go on again.
I tried to read the ECU error codes as it is described in the repair manual, but no codes are displayed (I shortened the two pins on the connector from the righ side under the gloves box and turned the ignition on).
Does anyone can detect what is the problem ? What am I doing wrong when reading the error codes?
Thanks.

This is how it was fixed:
I bought and installed a brand new BORG oxygen sensor, which turned out to be a defective one, so it did not solve the problem (it created a short circuit and burned a 15A fuse when installed). Then I bought and installed a brand new OEM Bosch sensor which solved the problem, i.e. the light went off (I olso reset the ECU).
With the new sensor the engine works better, but I don't see any gas/miles improvement.
