No Brake Lights/Double Speed Turn Signal
My 1998 1500 has no brake lights and only the front turn signals work but they flash about double speed. It started out on the driver's side. Bought a new bulb. That didn't work. Switched out panels to see if that was the problem. No help. When I put my passenger side panel back on, that one started doing the same as the driver's side. Before I at least had one turn signal and brake light, know I don't have either. The brake light on the cab works as well as the tail lights and reverse lights. Switched the combination flasher out with my buddies (same truck), no luck. Fuses and relays all seem to be working. What is the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to drive my truck bad. Hate to have to take it to a mechanic as I figure it is probably some minor glitch I can fix easily.

I've seen the turn signal flash twice as fast when either of the parking/turn signal lamps were dead or removed. Have you checked your connections?
I have no idea about your brake lights. Silly question, but have you checked your fuses and relays? Jeb

Re: No Brake Lights/Double Speed Turn Signal
might want to check your ground connection(s) for the tail lights. I had a similar problem with my 82 truck. the ground screw had started to rust, and came loose, and I would ocasionally loose tail/break lights, and the turn signals would flash real fast. I did everything that you have done(check fuses/relays, bulbs, plugs, and all that) wile checking the bulbs again, I happened to notice that the ground connection(where ground wire connected to body) was loose and a little rusty. I put a new end on the ground wire, cleaned up the rust, and put a new screw in it, and that solved the problem.
hope this helps, Keith

Re: No Brake Lights/Double Speed Turn Signal
You need two new circuit boards for the tail/stop lights. I have replace probably 3 pairs on my truck, they are prone to shorts and breakage.

Re: No Brake Lights/Double Speed Turn Signal
I agree with Matthew, I've had to replace 2 circuit boards on my 98 Z 71 in the past year, both on the left side...

Re: No Brake Lights/Double Speed Turn Signal
Yes, let's have a consensus, It's the board, just as Matthew pointed out.
If your not sure, just buy one and see if that fixes one side, then you will have your answer. |

Re: Re: No Brake Lights/Double Speed Turn Signal
Glad I found this forum! I have this exact problem(for months)...had tried everything but the circuit boards.
What do you mean by the Circuit boards? Where are they? (it has been awhile since I have tried again). TIA |

Re: No Brake Lights/Double Speed Turn Signal
The circuit boards are mounted on the tail light assemblies (sp), unhook the wiring harness and take out the 2 bolts holding them in and replace them. You can find them at the dealer, they cost $31.00 each here in MD.

I had the exact same problems/symptoms on my 1988 pickup... it was a blown fuse.
