overdrive gear

I have a 1998 Civic LX with an automatic transmission. The transmission will not shift into overdrive until the car is warmed up and driven for about 10 miles on the freeway. Could this be a solenoid problem? I know there are 2 of them on the transmission but don't know what each one does. I think one is called a speed solenoid and the other is a linear solenoid. I've changed the fluid a few times already but the problem still exists. Any ideas? Thanks

My 1992 does it also. In the manual it says it will not shift into overdrive untill the engine is FULLY warmed up. 4th gear IS the overdrive gear but I know what you mean, when you're cruising, you hold a steady speed and then all of the sudden you feel the rpms drop. My moms camry doesnt do it until its also warmed up also. Also says it in her manual. The car needs the higher rpms to warm up. Be patient

This just started happening a few months back. I guess I can live with it for now. Problem is that I live right off the freeway and it doesn't really get a chance to warm up before I get up to freeway speeds.

Mine takes about 2 miles to heat up. I would understand that once you get on the freeway you'd expect the car's RPM's not to be so high. here's a weird question, does your car warm up quickly and properly? How long does it take the temp guage to move up? I tend to hear so many problems with 98's, I dont know why

Re: overdrive gear

My car warms up normally. I would say that by the time I reach the freeway (4 blocks) the gauge already started to move. From what everyone is saying, I don't think this is normal since it was fine until a few months ago. I hope this isn't the beginning of the end of my tranny. What other problems are there with the 98's besides the exhaust manifold which I had replaced?
