Spun Bearing?WHAT TO DO???
someone mentioned a spun bearing, well i fear thats my current problem, also probably caused by over revving...WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS??? I was in a rush for a new car,and bought a car turned out to be a beater!
Seems like most of the S*** in the car is messed up,and im hoping to find a car in better condition, with more options, maybe a blown motor or whatever, and build a decent motor, but in the meantime, what do i do?the sound is at all rpms, and is relatively new,i was told if i do it quick enough,i may be able to just drop the oil pan,and pop out the old and put in new(rod bearings i assume),should i buy same size or oversized?and if oversized, how much?sound is only a few weeks old... i dont want to rebuild this motor because im unsure of what was done to it,and id like to buy more time with this car to find a better integra, one with AC,maybe some power windows and locks? If anyone has any suggestions of a way to fix/buy me some time,id apreciate it!!! My last car was a toyota paseo,it was fun,but it got a spun bearing within 4 or 5 months...my luck cant be that bad!!! Love integras.wont go back, please help me! |

that same thing happened to me back in june. i took my car to everyone and they said it was my valves tapping. so i replaced the head and the sound was still there. and they kept telling me that it was my valves hitting a piston. finally one guy told me that i probably spun a bearing. well sure enough that day my engine went. from what my friend said it could have been repalced by dropping that oil pan and fixing it before but, by then it was too late. so i had to get another engine. i ahd a racing chip in at the time and was reving it to 8k rpm's. your best bet is to get this fixed as soon as possible. the longer it goes the more of a chance that it will be non repalceable. sorry to hear that though. but keep in mind you might need another engine. and the engine i got was only $700. and i put it in myself so i saved alot more money.

i was told that it would not be a good idea to go with an oversized one. try to take it apart to see if it has worn into the block. if not get an oem bearing. if it has your block will need to be machined and in that case you might want another block or engine.

Re: Spun Bearing?WHAT TO DO???
How could you tell you spun a bearing?

it actually sounds as if your valves are tapping but, if you take one of those stethescopes that mechanics use or if your have a small wooden bat you take one end, stick it on the engine and place your ear on the other. now place it on top of the valve cover and move it around the valve cover. the sound should get louder the closer you get to what is causing the noise. now with a spun bearing you move it around the engine, and it kinda sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine(cam side) where the timing belt is. sounds as if it is all over the front of the engine. that is what was perplexing some of the mechanics that i talked to. they could hear the sound all over the engine and could not pin point it. when the valves tap you will be able to pin point which valve it is that is doing the tapping.

what rpms did u take ur car up too? u could have also bent a rod. that makes a ticking noise too.
if u think u spun a bearing, drop the oil pan and pull out the rod caps. change that bearing before it messes up ur crank. if it did already ur gonna have to drop the whole crank out to get it resurfaced.
