GRILLE REMOVAL - 96 Tacoma ?

My '96 headlights need replaced. What holds the grille on? Are there clips or what? The diagram in the owner's manual is no help. Question #Two: Can the instrument lights in the dash be replaced easily, or does the whole front assembly have to come off? Realize these are fundamental/simple things, but want to do as much of this myself rather than paying someone else.

Re: GRILLE REMOVAL - 96 Tacoma ?

I have a 95.5 and you need to take the side marker lights off to reveal screws or bolts. I can't remember which. The front part of the grill has clips. use a screwdriver and push down on the tab and it should pop out. Question#2. You have to remove the instrument cluster assembly. I believe the front cover has 3 screws, cluster has 4 bolts, speedo cable, and 4 electrical connectors. Be very careful when removing the instrument cluster and disconnect battery first. as fars as the instrument lights, I never had to replace them but once you remove the cluster it should be straight forward. If you plan on working on your truck, invest in the toyota shop manuals. They are worth it....

You may not have to remove the Front Grill to get the head-lights off, be sure you have to remove it before you start working with the clips, they break pretty easy.

YES YOU MUST REMOVE THE GRILL TO CHANGE HEADLIGHT ON A 96(2wd i assume, because u didnt say 4x4)...the corners do have to come off first, the screwdriver pushing down the tabs is all true, so is the part about it breaking easy. honestly i broke 2-3 tabs each time i had to replace a light and eventually when there are only 2 or 3 tabs left it;s easier to change...i hate this about my 96, and because of this i am trying to adapt a 97 grille and newstyle headlamps....

Re: GRILLE REMOVAL - 96 Tacoma ?

The 96 has the same grille thing going on as the '00 right? Same generation? If so, there are 4 tabs on top, 3 tabs on the bottom. The top ones are easy to get off by pinching the tabs with your fingers, or use a flat head screwdriver. The bottom ones are alot more difficult, and a flat head is the only way to get to them. I used to have a DIY of how to get them out on my cardomain site, but not anymore.
