I am about to start working on customizing my '66 malibu. I don't really care about keeping it original, so orginal parts aren't needed for my situation:
The locks on my doors do not work whatsoever. When you put the key in the lock, the key will fit, but you cannot turn it enough to unlock/lock the door. As it is right now, I am not able to lock my car, because in order to get back into it, I have to unlock it via a coat hanger through the window. So before I start spending money on restoration, I would like to have some sort of security/reliable locks. I know that I could probably get somebody to fix the locks or get new ones and switch them out, but I was also wondering if it would be possible to get some custom/more modern locks, so the car wouldn't be so easy to steal? Even if I got new orig. locks, I hear that older cars are notoriously easy to steal. What options do I have, and what would the respective cost of something like this be? Also, the windshield of my car is cracked pretty badly, does anyone have a link to a place to get another one, or would I be better off trying to get somebody locally to replace it? Edit: One more question - what is the price range for work on/replacements for windshields on a car like this? |

Re: Custom locks question; Also, where is a good place to get a replacement windshield?
After the unfortunate loss of my day old back glass after reaching a speed of 90 mph, I had to begin the search for a new one. I think the place was Auto Glass, and if i remember correctly, a remove/replace was $280, glass included. The glass alone was around $200.
I dont know if changing the locks will decrease the change of theft. If someone wants to steal your car and they know how to do it, nothing will stop them from trying. I think the best bet would be an alarm

Year One would have the locks and probably the back glass. You can order a 64-72 Chevelle catalogs for $7.50. Go to www.yearone.com

Windows 101
Put tape up the window (duck tape), busting it out is easy, picking up the pieces is not so fun, especially when you still find pieces after a long time.
Thread piano wire through an opening and run it along the edge to separtae it from the window frame. The black sealant is sticky and a pain to deal with, but remember it provides a good bond and a good run around the window with the wire is important. look in your phone book, under windshields, usually there are 1-800 places that will give you a quote and locate an installer locally for you. The problem with buying a used window is getting a chipped/ broken/scratched window/ and the pains with refunds/insurance and your time. It costs me about 200-300 for a front window. Before you call, make sure you have new clips that hold the window up/in place. About 5-10 bucks at any chevelle online parts seller. The clips have 1 screw and remember the direction they are in, install the new ones when you remove the old so you wont forget. The usually have a large tube of black sealant goop, they squeeze a nice thick bead around the window, set it in, and your ready to put on the chrome 4-7 pieces in, they should snap into the clips. Its important to do this now, or have them do it. As far as cheveele parts, use a search engine, you will find dozens of them. Good luck |

Re: Custom locks question; Also, where is a good place to get a replacement windshield?
For a custom lock system try Auto-Lok, they have some other cool stuff as well. For the back glass i would go to Year One the offer full glass kits for the Chevelle or you can get just the back glass.
