D1NZ Round 5, Manfeild (56k WARNING - 58 PICS)

OK. So round 5 of D1NZ was at Manfeild yesterday, and this time round, Tokkie got an all access pass So, I trudged all over the track, sometimes mere metres from it, while all manner of machine flew past me at insane speeds. Sideways.

Thomas Chen's S15 (now used more as a hack for D1, drifts seldom. Used to drift competively)

Very tasty fire breathing FC3S. I don't have any fire pics though, unfortunately.

Urban Camo/drift cow C33 Laurel. Team: Driftcorp.

Sexy as hell A31 Cefiro. Driftcorp.

Sister-ship R32 Skyline. Driftcorp.

Team shot

Desert Camo A31. Team: West Side Rotor. Nice plate.

Patrol C33 Laurel. WSR. Spot the screamer pipe for the wastegate on the left fender.

Engine of said C33.

Random R32

I just love this shot.

More cars

D1SPEC A31 Cefiro driven by Justin Rood. Driftcorp

A31 Cefiro. Don't let the home made bonnet vent fool you. This thing had an RB26.

Hayden Ferguson's 180SX. Used to be red and very, very battle scarred.

Very tidy AE86. I think it was turbocharged, can't remember.

"Top Gun" A31

Pink S15. Yum.

Those were taken during scrutineering etc, then they lined up, had a drivers briefing, and I made my way to the S bends. Then they started their practice and qualifying runs.

Victor Chapman (this car laid more smoke than anything else on the day, no question)

SPLASH!! First lap of the day, cold tyres, came in too hot, and went swimming. That pool would claim many cars that day.

R33 with awesome paintjob

Sean Falconer

We then moved to a different spot for the next qualifying runs.

There are three cars in this picture.

One of my favourite pics

Very proud of this pic too

The pic doesn't do justice to how close he actually was too me. I just wish it was in focus

Random ducks on the track! These were crossing between qualifying runs, so we made our way again down the track to the hairpin.

RB20 powered VL commodore.

After these, it was back into the pits for lunch, so I took the opportunity to snap more pics.

Jairus Wharerau's C33 Laurel. This used to be his tow car for his A31, but that got smashed, so he transferred a lot of its bits into this thing.

After lunch, it was time for the battles. The top 16 scoring cars were paired up at random, then they race eachother. One leads, one follows. The follower has to try match the leader's drifts as close as possible. They then swap position, and the one with the most points moves onto the next round. We returned to our original position for the next shots.

I decided, bugger this, I'm too far away, and stood closer to the track, but out of the line of the cars should they spin off.

Sean Falconer's S13. He was battling the Mag & Turbo S13, which spun off and got stuck in the mud pit. Then this happened:

The Silvia was flooded with water and couldn't start. So the Terrano arrives to pull it out. And gets stuck. They then had to get an Isuzu Mu and a few people to pull them both out. Good times

Another victim!

VL Commy vs A31 monster

Adam Richards was battling the white R32. Adam made it through, the R32...

...went swimming.

Jairus Wharerau vs Victor Chapman. Victor made it through to the next round.

The red 180SX [SPENT] against Sean Falconer. SPENT came in too hot..

And went swimming as well!

Probably my favourite photo. Jairus Wharerau coming in hard, passing me with about 10ft clearance.

Close enough?

Justin Rood vs Adam Richards in the final. Just went on to take the win.

Celebratory burnouts.

Runner up burnouts.

Prize giving. End result: Just Rood (Dcorp) 1st, Adam Richardson (WSR) 2nd, Victor Chapman (Onion Drift) 3rd.

Re: D1NZ Round 5, Manfeild (56k WARNING - 58 PICS)

Oh, forgot to add, there's a lack of smoke in the battles because it pissed with rain intermittantly through the day.

Dried up nicely for the finals though

Why are all the cars going sideways around the turns?

J/K, nice pictures. And you gotta hook me up with one of those cool vests.

Re: D1NZ Round 5, Manfeild (56k WARNING - 58 PICS)

Freakin awsome photos mate!

You should show some of those to NZPC, they are that good!

There is nothing like getting close to the action, I remember attenting one of the WRC rounds at one of the Northland stages, and getting hold of a marshals vest (don't ask how) and useing it to stand right on the inside edge of a corner. I was young and stupid at the time, but being 2ft away from the cars is an experiance I will never forget.
You've done an awsome job of captureing that proximity and showing the speed and action at the same time.

Awsome photos.

I saw the pink S15 on a trailer heading back into Auckland last night, it was around 11:30pm so they must have had a long day.
