Rear Rotors are stubborn, wont come off

My friend has a 95 cavalier, and his rear brakes are really bad, they dont work anymore. I was going to replace the pads and anything else that needed to be replaced back there while i replaced the front braking system, all four struts, and major tune up, but, i cant get the darn drums off. Ive tried a "really big hammer" as the wonderfull people at the local chevy dealership suggested, but all it did was nothing.
So i come to plea, help me fix this car.

did you try penetrating oil, since you are changing the pads it won't hurt anything.

A helpful Tip.

You might have to back off the brake adjuster, there is probably a ridge on the drum. If you remove the plug on the rear of the backing plate and put a screw driver in the hole, click the adjuster till the drum gets loose, if the drum stops turning your going the wrong way!.

Good Luck

Re: Rear Rotors are stubborn, wont come off

um.... yea.....to my knowledge cavaliers do not have rear rotors unless you have upgraded... but by the way the car has been treated, not possible..but as for getting the DRUMS off did u take a hammer and hit around the hub and inbetween the studs? should be the only place binding the brakes up...or if worse come to worse... get a flat head screw driver and there is a stiff metal plate behind the drum...stick it in there and pry out and hit the top lip of the rotor from the bottom as you are prying from the top... or...get a welding torch and heat around the hub but do not melt the metal....

Re: Rear Rotors are stubborn, wont come off

After applying PB Blaster on the hub center, wait a few minutes. Place a 2x4 piece behind the drum on the edge, hit the wood with 4-lbs (or heavier) hammer. When I did mine, I tried everything until I used the heavier hammer. You don't need to hit it fast, the key is the weight of hammer.
