gearbox ID and mainshaft repair

Just pulled the 5 speed manual gearbox from my 1990 EX sedan. The mainshaft seems to have a lot of up-down play, and when I spin it their is a noise that can only suggest a broken bearing. The gearbox also made a unusual noise under de-accelaration and downshifting when it was on the road.

Given the the play in the mainshaft and the bearing noise, I am going to assume that the problem is the mainshaft bearing.

Is it hard to replace?
Is it expensive to buy the bearing?
Anyone done this repair before?
Can you tell the type of gearbox by the serial number? (mine is L3 2031517)
Cheers,
Damo.

Just rebuilt a L3 bout a week ago and not hard at all. sounds like a mainshaft bearing gone bad though. as far as price for bearing i dunno.

Well, the sun is rising on the East Coast, and I am about to begin pulling apart the gearbox. There is a lot of oil in the bell housing and the car leaked quiet a bit, so I am assuming that it is the rear main seal. My clutch would sometimes slip- that may because of the oil leaking from the rear main seal and finding its way to the clutch plate- a bit of a scrub should fix that!.
How do those Koni yellows go on your car? I had some on my Datsun 510, along with other serious suspension mods and it out-handled most new cars- they rule!.

cheers,
Damo

Re: gearbox ID and mainshaft repair

I had my bearings replaced in my Si tranny. I didn't do it, but the bearing kit cost like $180 or something like that and labor was cheap (installed a clutch and flywheel too). But my tranny only lasted another 2k miles before going to crap. I replaced the whole tranny with same clutch/flywheel for cheap again but was out that bearing kit... GL

well that sucks!, but if you drive hard, then there is always a weak link that will eventually perish!.

I live in Ontario,Canada so anything to do with cars is expensive (Canada is a expensive place to live!). I used to live in Colorado where car parts are cheap!. I will look into the price of the bearing and let you know how I go!

cross your fingers and wish me luck!
