I am leaking oil because the whole underbody of my car is filthy with oil.... does anyone have an idea of why its smoking or leaking so bad? and how much do you think it would cost to get fixed?

that is a serious problem. oil in the tailpipe and smoke means that your "valve stem seals" have worn out. these are small gaskets that cost around $15.00 but to replace them you have to take your heads appart......very costly, with labor it can be anywhere from $600 to $900. now the oil all over the engine is another problem. either your valve cover seal has worn or the head gasket is leaking. if its the valve cover gasket then that is very easy to fix. if its the head gasket then you also have to remove the heads......but since your gonna do that anyway to change the valve stem seals then there you go. one very unlikely but plausable case could be that your header is loose and you happen to be leaking from the valve cover, in which case the oil will seap into the header and come out the tailpipe....youd have to clean the whole engine spik span squeeky clean to look for the leak(s). also look for leaks around the oil pan, belt and pulleys and camshafts. with this kinda stuff you never know where the oil is coming from until you degrease the whole engine.

Re: OIL PROBLEM! hELP!
Yeah, having to add 3 qts is definantly not good, you have a serious leak. How many miles do you have on your car, and how long has it been since your last oil change? I'm guessing that you have over 100k if your valve stem seals are worn...but I think Musashi hit the nail on the head.

Do the valve guide seals usually wear out around 100k on the the 3kgt? isn't that kind of a short life span compared to most imports? I'm coming up on 100k, I don't want to have to take apart the head. It would be a fun project im sure but I dont have much time for it or money.

Re: OIL PROBLEM! hELP!
No, they don't typically wear out that early, but if it happens, it generally happens when your mileage has hit 6 digits. I know quite a few 90-93 honda accords with worn piston rings(mine included) that were leaking oil around 140k. Every car has a specific set of problems that seem to occur more often on those cars than others. This is just one of those problems for our cars.

the heads on my car where done not too long ago, about 30k back to be exact. and its a good idea, the valve job really brings spunk back into a mature engine! |
