Died on highway!! Help please

My sons 96 neon died on his way home tonight. He said it just lost power and died. I went to tow it home and check it out. It cranks but does not fire. Fuel pump sounds as if it is working when you turn the key on. Fuel pump fuse and relay check out. No check engine lights so no OBD codes to help me out. I have not pulled a plug to check for spark yet.
Anybody else have this problem? Any help would be appreciated.
