1989 Century Custom Headliner woes

The basic situation was that the headliner was sagging and really irritating. So I ended up removing the whole thing from the car.

Removed the dome light, visors and interior plastic. Took the whole headliner out of the car. ITS FRIGGIN FIBERGLASS!!!!! So I removed the now degraded old headliner cloth and then proceed to remove the gunk from the old sponge material.

Its not just gunk, its sponge and glue and STICKY! So when that is pretty well removed the best I could, I put the new headliner on with 3M Super 77 and let it set for 1 whole day upside down. Reglued a few areas that managed to fall.

Reinstalled the now better headliner in the car and 2 days later, it sags. Not as bad as the first one, but I am still pissed about it.

I think I am going to get a razor and cut it to REGLUE IT AGAIN then try my best to hide the incisions.

And to top it all off, I had a spark plug unthread itself from the engine the other day for no reason. And now the transmission seems to slip a little. Argh!

If anyone knows if there is a replacement hardboard for this car, please let me know.

Just use the 3M glue to glue trunk "carpet" to the metal then you can glure the fabric to that. or just leave the carpet exposed. I have done several over the years and no one has noticed. You can get the trunk liner/carpet at Pepboys. It looks like the material on the rear deck so it doesn't look bad even when you look closely. Good Luck

Same falling headliner I “temporarily” put duck tape up it actually stuck even through the hot summer of South Texas it no one noticed because it matched the gray interior. I always wanted an affordable better solution to this problem I think I’m going to try that.
