Timing Belt

How much is it to get a new one.

I own a 1990 Grand Am LE with 175859 miles on it.

I was still wondering if anyone has had to replace a timing belt. I was just wondering how much it was.

Re: Timing Belt

why junk the car? Go spend a few $$$ on a belt. I'm thinking like $20 or less.....never changed one on a GA....

Re: Timing Belt

Quad 4's don't have a timing belt. they have a timing chain and a series of guides and tensioners that keep it tight. There is no regular change interval, but you'll grenade the engine if the timing jumps due to a stretched chain or bad tensioner.

Re: Timing Belt

From what I've seen of you car I still say's it the clutch.

And since he won't post about his problem, i'm a close friend so I'll speak for him. Maybe you guys can answer him.

When ever he starts up the car, cold or hot, the car will idle for a sec and start dying. He has to apply a good amount of gas till it stops. Then when he's driving, comes to a stop and starts to move, the car will not move than suddenly move. It's like it has a period of time where it's slipping. You guys think you could help him. Oh and MasterChief1724, if I didn't state any thing here, just post another one adding on. Thanks everyone.

Shaguar it is NOT the clutch because the car was taken to the garage and they said it was the timing chain. Richtazz thank you for correcting me. I was just told it was a belt. But the cheapest we could have it fixed for was $1200. That is freaking crazy but I don't know anything about changing or fixing them. So I just may get a different car. I would rather not mess this one up any more taking it up to the farm where I work. LOTS of potholes.
