College Republicans

Well I've made a new step in my life. I've joined a newly formed College Republicans group on my college campus. It's only about a month in, and we're up to 29 official members, but close to 200 faculty/staff and students who have asked to be kept updated on what's going on. We have even been praised by a few very liberal professors for actually getting involved in the political arena.

At last nights meeting the President of the Democratic group was present at our meeting. I was unable to talk to him, but he seemed like a good guy and graciously thanked the President for inviting him for a sit-in.

The big CBS/Dan Rather controversy circling the news right now was brought up. They plan to protest him today on campus. I am strongly against the protest and any protest for that matter. But the motion was accepted by a vote of 11-9. The biggest reason for the protest is b/c our communications building is named the "Dan Rather Communications Building" as he is alumni. The only thing I'm praying for is that I hope the group does not become an activist group. In that case I will withdrawl myself from any association with the group.

My question is are you currently or have you been involved with a political organization and what was your experience.

Re: College Republicans

why would you withdraw yourself from an activist group? just a thought.

ive been involved in a lot of "political groups" and my main find is that most of them spend alot of time talking and not too much time actually doing anything. that and most of it just seems to be a buerocratic waste of time.

that being said...do maintain political involvement. its an important part of life as an american.

What I meant by that is if they begin to lose sight on the group and want to become more of a protest group I really don't want to be involved in that. Unless I believe in the protest I don't particularly want anything to do with the protest.

Not sure if that makes much sense. I'm having a hard time finding words to explain myself.

I've protested protesters before, but haven't spent the energy marching around carrying signs about anything else.

Protesting has its place and I don't see anything wrong with people doing it - nor do I see any problem of making fun of them when they take moronic positions.

Re: College Republicans

I agree with Yogs. I have seen some absolutely silly people protesting absolutely silly things at one of my previous jobs.

Re: College Republicans

it's very easy to dismiss all protestors as silly because of the actions of a few space cadets and professional complainers.

Getting involved in politics at any level has got to be better than not even bothering to vote, then spending the next four years complaining.

True, remember all those jackasses a few years back, with all those signs saying there were no WMDs in Iraq, and it'd be a disaster if we invaded? Whatta bunch of goofs

You obviously don't know your history. Carter, FDR and Grant were truely the bottom of the barrel.
