Fuel pump location
My 97 yesterday started sputtering while driving, at the light put teh car in netural and it would idle fine but step on the gas and nothing. I got it started and heard what sounded like an exhaust leak, when I reved the car it stalled and then would not restart. Any suggestions? I am going to check the fuse for the fuel pump and then replace the filter. My last hope is the fuel pump, but I need to know the location. I am guessing it is under the rear seat on top of the tank. Please help!

not sure if 97s have it but peel the carpet back in the front of the trunk (closest to the cab) and they'll be a small access panel, just remove the aluminum nuts and there's the pump.

Just talked to the dealer. They said it's in the gas tank. This don't sound like fun.

Got the filter changed and you could not even blow through it. But it still will not start, just turns over. Have what seems like goo PSI from the pump, since when I depress the schrader valve on teh fuel rail I have fuel and pressure. Any other suggestions?

Sounds like you may have a problem with the fuel pump resistor.
Many people have been left stranded with a car that doesn't run at all or at best idles for a few seconds and then dies. Most of the time it's happened to some unwary GPer sitting at a light... they turn to go, move a few feet and the car dies, or it dies a few seconds after starting. This is the fault of the fuel pump resistor. This offending piece is located (on 97/00) under the fender area BEHIND the battery. If one gets the right angle you can just see it by looking into the fender in that area. How it is done: Well, the fix is that the fuel resistor needs to be replaced, but if one is on the side of the road with a "dead" car, what can be done? Steve Foster of the OQCGP offered this advice: Here is what you do. Remove the relay in the underhood electrical center by your battery. The relay should be labeled "f/pmp spd cont relay" or something along those lines. It is supposed to read fuel pump speed control. Take along a paperclip, and short out pins 30 and 87A. to do this, remove the relay, and where those pins were on the fuse-block, put the paperclip in those 2 positions. If you do not feel comfortable doing that, another option follows. Remove the same relay as above. Bend over the one lead of the relay labeled 85 or 86. Either one will work. reinsert relay into original position. This is a temporary fix.So No racing  Hope this helps you out..........~Larry~

There is no relay in the fuse box in the front of the car, On the lable it is marked for one in #15, but nothing is there. This is just a 97 GT with the 3.8 not a GTP

Fuel pump location is in the trunk under the spare tire.
Disconnect the vehicle’s battery. Remove your spare tire, jack, and pull back or remove the carpeting in your trunk. You will see a plate at the front of the trunk right behind the rear seat.  Step 2: Remove the seven 10mm nuts on the plate and gently use a flat-blade screwdriver to pry the plate up  Step 3: Remove the two electrical weatherpack connectors and the three fuel line connections. Remove the two outside fuel lines by squeezing the clear plastic retaining clips together and pulling outward. The middle fuel line is removed by applying a gentile squeeze to the black ring and pulling outward. Remove the retaining c-clip around the pump assembly.   Step 4: Remove the in-tank assembly by pulling up and sliding the whole assembly up and out of the tank. Be careful as you remove the assembly because you will have to maneuver the end of the assembly to the side to remove it due to the tank level sender and fuel sock. DO NOT FORCE THE ASSEMBLY OUT. Rotate it and tilt it to the side until the assembly slides out.

Thanks for all your helps guys!! I have goo fuel pressure at the schrader valve. I had it towed to teh dealer this afternoon and so far the results are not good, they say I have coolant in the air intake. They are going to pull the plugs and check the compression and see how much coolant is being pulled. I am hoping fo good news if there is any. Atleaset I did not hear any tapping or pingging so I hope my crank bearings are still good and not washed out. I will post what they find when I hear from them tomorrow.

Nice Job On the Fuel Pump Picks!
I think one of the things people forget to do is start from the basics 1) Battery Voltage Good (Yes) or (No) 2) Spark (YES) or (NO) 3) Fuel Pressure (Yes) or (No) With Guage! 4) Injector Pulse (Yes) or (No) With Noid Light 5) Codes (Yes) or (No) I find sometimes people get to far ahead of themselves and forget to do the basic checks. Just My Opionion! Mr.Rob Lic Mech Auto/Truck/Trailer Ect.....
