Hi. I have a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire GT with about 110,000 km on it. It has been in the shop since the day the warrantly ran out. Anyway, I'm sick of taking time off work to take it in. The current problem is a maddening high-pitched whistle that sounds like a tea tea kettle. It's coming from the passenger side front end. Switching the settings on the ventilation system doesn't seem to help. It happens when I go over 100 km/h, and is so loud I can't hear the radio over it. Problem is, I commute an hour to work and take a major highway, so I have to deal with this twice a day for an hour. I'm going insane. Please, does anyone have any suggestions about what this could be?

Re: 2001 Sunfire GT High-pitched whistle
Could be that you need to replace your brakes or possibly a bad bushing or bearing in your alternator or waterpump.

Reason I ask , is that when I picked up my 02 sunfire at the dealership , there was a high pitched sound coming from somewhere in the dash that only occured when the ac or the heat was on. Turns out that it was an unbalanced fan Tuxxer |

Hi all. Thanks all, for your replies. Since I posted I figured out it's definitely a windshield/sunroof problem. If I'm going down the highway and this noise starts, if I press really hard on the roof between the top of the windshield and the sunroof, the noise stops. Your arm gets a little tired of that after a while though, so I need a more permanent solution.
Regarding the weather stripping problem mentioned above, however, I have had serious problems with the weather stripping on both sides. It was so bad that water came in when going through car washes. I had my dealership "replace the weather stripping" on both sides, and get this...all they did was reinforce the old weather stripping with a plastic drinking straw, like the kind you would get with your pop (or SODA) at McDonalds. You can actually see the end of it. I have pictures! I could sue! Oh my god! I was so mad. Anyway, *sigh*. I guess I'll just take my car in to a windshield place to get it fixed. Another couple hundred dollars eaten up by this car....I'd get rid of it if I could, but I'm in negative equity on it, so I have to put up with it for at least another year.... |
