bad power steering pump?

Just recently i noticed that when i am about to park (while turning into the parking space) the steering is very tough as if it didnt have power steering. This happens when im steering in and out of a parking spot. The turn softens when i let go the brake and give it gas, why? At first i thought it could of been the tires, but i doubt it (pirelli scorpio tires). I did notice that my PSpump is somewhat over filled, could this be the culprit? Before this happened it turned easily with one finger, now im actually using both hands. This only happens when im almost at a stand still and foot on brake...

any suggestions.

Re: bad power steering pump?

I have just recently noticed the same problem in my car. My local mechanic couldn't figure it out and the dealership wants to replace the whole thing. What do you know about this problem??

Saludos Chicano:

I dont know if the PS pump of GC has similar design, but recently I have the same problem in a Toyota car and the problem was that the inside filters of the pump was dense "dirt", so I take off the pump and I disarmed and clean with gasoline or carbulator cleaner, put new ORings as needed and I armed it and problem solved
good luck!!

Re: bad power steering pump?

did u take ur lines off (power steering lines), the reason I ask it sounds like u have a air pocket in your steering lines, and then they would have to be bled, not a hard task.

Re: bad power steering pump?

take your foot off the brake. problem solved..... next.

you realy shouldnt turn the wheel with the brakes locked. its hard on the tire the steering structure and the framework of the car. but in any case the pully may be slipping or the idle may be slow. depending on the year of your jeep the brakes are also assisted by the power steering pump, so it worked twice as hard. if you have a tachometer you shouldnt be idleing less than 500 rpms. also check for a belt is oily.

good luck
