yikes..

well, the guy doing my tranny swap just gave me a call... told me a few things i didn't wanna hear.. the u-joint on the steering column (i think) is totally shot, ready to fall out (steering wheel had a bit of play in it) which isn't too bad... $50 fix or whatever... next.. it's still the ORIGINAL clutch in there (257000km on this clutch.... ) so that needs to be replaced now... also, the cat(same deal as the clutch) is about 75% plugged... so hopefully when we put a glasspack in there, it'll give a noticeable power boost... this car's going from costing me 1200 cad to 3000..... oh well at least i'll have nice new everything in there...

Re: yikes..

ahh i'm not going to have much left of what i started off with... started off with about 8k including personal savings... car is going to cost me approx 3500, 2500 to the parents for what i still owed em on the last car... so that leaves around 2k left over, which i need to save if i'm moving in the near future, which it looks like i will be.. there's nothing left for me in this damn town, no work, no friends, nothing to do... everyone moved away, so it looks like that's what i'll be doing as well

Re: yikes..

you will feel a huge boost in power with unclogged cats. my cat on my last car got clogged and when it got replaced there was a HUGE difference. thats a lot of miles on a clutch.

Re: yikes..

got the car back today, definitely noticed a boost in power, altho, i don't think i'm hitting full throttle when i floor it... there's no big change in sound like there was with my last car when hitting wot, so i'm thinking my throttle cable might have shimmied loose or something.. got the clutch plate and the intermediate shaft to bring home... i'll get a pic of it when i can, the intermediate linkage ring( i think?) is about 1/8th of an inch bigger than it should have been, so the whole steering shaft was just sitting in there rattling around, which was causing the freeplay in the steering wheel.. one of the metal pieces that held one of the springs in place on the clutch was snapped off and rattling around in there causing all sorts of scratches and stuff on the face of the clutch, it's just nasty lookin.. lol..
so the total from that place came to about 1400... which is more than i paid for the whole damn car.. lol, oh well, i'd say it'll be worth it in the long run. smells like tranny fluid inside the car now tho... is that normal?
also, i think my tach cable is loose, it kind of bounces around when i shift and starts to bounce around a bit when i get over 4k rpm... kind of a pisser cause i don't really know when to shift... don't want to be bouncing off redline/rev limiter without knowing it.. not sure where i'd go to tighten it or fix it..
one mooooooore thing, today after pulling into my buddy's driveway, there was this hideous rattling sound coming from the dash area, couldn't figure out what the hell it was until i moved the heat control thing from cold over to around the middle... sound completely went away, moved it back over to the side, didn't start up again... i'm thinking something stuck in the vents or something??
uhh, that's it for now, lol

Real easy to fix. Take the stupid plastic cover off your intake manifold (if you haven't already). You should have 2 throttle cables coming into the throttle linkage in the middle (One for the pedal, one for cruise control). These cables will have 2 nuts each on them, one behind and one in front of the throttle cable bracket. All you really need to do is loosen the nut in front of the bracket and move it forward, then tighten the nut at the back.

Effectively what you're doing is moving the throttle cable back, which in turn will tighten the throttle cable. Don't bring it back too far. You want the throttle cable to be firm when no pressure on the pedal, but the throttle bodies must still be closed.
Be careful that you dont overtighten the nuts too. You dont want to strip the thread on the throttle cable.

However keep in mind that if you have an automatic, if you tighten the throttle cable too much, the pedal may not be able to reach the kickdown switch which affects the gearbox shifting.

haha no, not really.

No such thing. Its all electronically controlled. The best you could do is replace the instrument cluster with a new one, but thats going to cost you a fair bit ($300 from a wreckers, god knows how much from nissan)

I cant for the life of me figure out what this could be. I would say that the heat control thing wouldn't have affected it, could have just been coincidence that it stopped when you did that. The heater control just adjusts how much coolant flows through the heater radiator. At cold, it doesn't let any coolant flow through (but coolant is still in there, its not an empty radiator) whereas the more hotter you get, the more coolant it allows through.

Cheers.

Re: yikes..

haven't gotten around to lookin at the car yet, but it sounds pretty easy to adjust the throttle cable.. i think the smell is because i just got the tranny swapped, could be the guy got some oil inside the car now it'll just take a while to get the smell out. for the dash.. it's the analog one... and there's gotta be some sort of cable that controls the tach or something... the only other thing i could think of is having a solenoid controlling a tensioned spring, because that's the only other thing i've seen bounce around like that (analog multimeter)

that sound might have something to do with the a/c come to think of it... something's wrong with it so the previous owner pulled the belt off of it and just left it sitting in there... not sure tho. but i am sure that it's got something to do with the position of the temp control slider, because it did that before too

oh.. and thanks

Re: yikes..

IIRC, with the tacho, its actually a little servo inside that is controlled via the revolution signals from the crank angle sensor. If its bouncing around, then i'd say you need to replace the servo, which you cant. You have to replace the entire instrument cluster.

I could be wrong though. I know for sure the z32 instrument cluster is all electronic which is a bitch because my 85 zed has a speedo cable that connects to the gearbox. The newer gearbox however doesn't have a hole where the cable can go because its designed to be used with an electronically controlled dash.
