new Civic Si paint swirls
Hey guys,
Anyone got any advice? I bought an 04 Civic Si about a month ago. It was an overcast day, and i was quite honestly stoked to just drive my brand new Nighthawk black Si off the lot. Under closer inspection and more sunlight, a barrage of swirl marks in my brand new cars paint job reflected the sun in a much unsavory manor. The dealer has offered to detail the car. I don't have a pic to show the extent, but every panel is affected. I'm wondering if a detail is as much as i could expect from a dealer. I used to detail for a living, and I know that buffing out swirls is really just polishing the edging of the subtle scratches to reduce the visual effect. I'd really prefer they comp me a wet sand and a re clear coat, to eliminate the swirls all together. Does this seem like a drastic solution to anyone. In my opinion, if i were say buying a 5 yr old car, i'd say just buff em out. A brand new car though i'm inclined to believe should be in "new" condition courtesy, the Dealer

I'd be pissed too to have swirlmarks on a brand new car. You'd think the dealer would notice that sort of thing before they let someone take delivery of their new car. Try to haggle with the salesmen or a manager over this. Not sure if you'll have any luck or not, but good luck.

ya exactly
i was at the dealer the other day when it was sunny, and noticed quite a selection of new cars w/ swirled paint jobs on them. Excluding the one S2000 of course. I have reported them to Honda of America, hopefully they will back me. I'd have to imagine they don't need someone giving them bad publicity.

Re: new Civic Si paint swirls
It happens when you use terry cloth towels to dry your car. I was told to use synthetic towels like chamois to dry.

Yeah looks like they need to find a new detailer to work there, aka fire the jackass who did it to the cars.

Re: new Civic Si paint swirls
yup, i'm well aware of the dmg. terry cloth can do to a car. As well as many other things, it basically takes alot of work to keep your paint from swirling. Drive thru car washes are a big paint job killer, as well as drying your car w/ out getting all the dirt off will just drag the remaining dirt across your paint. Over buffing can do dmg., even water w/ alot of minerals can leave deposits that pull across your paint when you dry. So there are plenty of conditions that can hurt your paint regardless of what drying mat'l you use. But, the synthetic chamois is the best, as well as a well worn, (clean) cotton tshirt.

Take the car to a body shop and ask them how much to charge to cut and buff the clear coat. trust me it will work. My father-in-law owns his own bady shop and he just painted my car. It had hella swirls he said to come back in two weeks. I took it back and he cut and buffed the clearcoat every thing came out. It has like a show car finish now. I never could have imagined a more reflective finish. My friend has an S2000 it had swirls we took it in it is better now than off the showroom floor. trust me ask for a cut and buff of the clear coat.
