85 GT performance rebuild
I'm nearing the end of my 2 year rebuild on my 85 GT. About 2 weeks ago I got the entire engine running properly. Its the original 2.8, but it was bored .040 over to make it almost an even 3.0.
I bought Forged Aluminum pistons to up the compression to 9.5:1, polished the valves, and bought the powermax 2030 cam and lifter set. I made some custom exhaust headers for it, and bored the intake plenum (both parts) and the throttle body. The valvetrain is basically new with the polished valves, and some new perf. springs. New crank new bearings, etc. (The standard rebuild deal.) Here's my big question: This thing thumps, I was incredibly surprised at the sound comming out of this when it fired up. It sounds ballsy for a 3.0L engine. I got all the error codes to disappear, but it still has throuble idleing. No surpised since witht he cam change, the compression is nearly 190psi in each cylinder, which is actually closer to a 10.2:1 compression ratio. I've given up on 89 octane and have gone with 93. It runs with no intermittant skips now, but occassionally comming down from (its new redline because of the lightweight pistons high perf springs and forged steel crank) 6800-7000 rpm, it over shoots idle and stalls. This puppy has dynoed at 234hp at the flywheel at 3600rpm, (with headers) and almost 290lb-ft of torque at 2800rpm. I'm wondering if all the changes are confusing the ECU. Keep in mind i've only had it running on a dyno, and on a stand, not on the road yet, so the ECU may not have had time to calibrate properly. I'm wondering this: Do OBD 1 ECUs take 40-50 miles to calibrate properly like OBD 2s? AND Will the hypertech ECU chip help eliminate this problem? I'm not into the chip = power thing. That's basically bullshit. But I was thinking that it might deal with a modified engine better. Anyone have experience with these chips? Anyone gotten a 2.8L to put out that much power? P.S. On a side note, next summer (I go to college now) this puppy will be turboed. I plan on about 5-7psi because of the compression (too much for a turbo really), anyone done this? |

Most performance chips for a "stock" Fiero 2.8 aren't worth the money. They usualy tell the MAP that the air is cold and cause the car to run rich.
But since you have a bored out 2.8 to 3.0, with a cam change, I haven't a clue as to what it would do in your car. The 2.8 is a relatively weak engine and you've maxxed out displacement. I don't have much hope of engine longevity once you install a turbo on it and install it in a car and start pushing it. Have fun. |

fiero nerd im goin through the same problem as you are currently going through. your best bet is to get a custom e prom made for that car! my e prom is currently in transit if it improves i will let you know since i basicaly have the same modifications just bored .030 over
