91 Galant Tranny prblms 3rdgearstick

I have a 91 Mitsubishi Galant with a 2.0 Ltr engine. It has an auto trans with the econo/power button and an overdrive button- the car has 130k miles. Originally the lights regarding trans functions all went out and it would only stay in 3rd gear. It would go into park and reverse, but would not shift into low etc. It would only go to 35mph b4 the rpms got too high, it was not shifting into overdrive. I found a blown fuse which brought the lights on and it would shift into the lower gears but when it was ready to shift into overdrive, it would flip into neutral. I found that if i turned the overdrive button to off, and then ran 3rd gear up to or slightly above its normal shift rpm and then pressed the OD button, it would go into overdrive and stay. After a few times ( a day or two) of this procedure, it began to work normally without the button pushing game. After 4-5 weeks it went back to being in 3rd gear all the time, but this time the fuse wasn't blown. What's wrong with this beast?

have you taken it to a shop? it sounds like you may have a problem with the TCU and poss. the ECU. Mine had a problem with the ECU (5speed man.) that was caused by design. the memory battery started leaking and ran all the way down the cirguit board and destroyed it. I would definitely get it checked out by a pro. Aside from that, when was the last time you had the tranny fluid changed? it gets dirty like oil does, just not as often.

Closer to fixed on third gear stick

If this site will let me put on pictures I got something to show you all. Turns out that so far Tommyboy62 is right. In the center of the car behind the radio is the tranny computer just like he said. I opened up the tranny computer and lo and behold the centralized capacitor had burnt up. I got pics to show you all. Only problem is that he said to replace it with a 50v 47micro farad high resistance capacitor. Mine IS that capacitor, so I don't know if their is just a BIGGER one I can get or what but im going to try and figure it out. Here are the pics if they don't come up sorry.
OK turns out I can't post em here so just gimme a minute and Ill post em on another site and send the links.
