Re: 86 Fiero Taillight Problem
Check the switch on the brake pedal, if the taillights work that's usually where the problem lies. It CAN'T be a ground because the tail lamps and brake lights share a ground wire. If the ground is bad neither work.

Re: 86 Fiero Taillight Problem
Good news, but be careful. That fuse could have been pulled because it kept blowing, and that could mean a short somewhere.

Re: 86 Fiero Taillight Problem
Under the center console, there is a white switch that is depressed to activate the backing lights when the shift lever is in the reverse position. You probably just need to adjust the position of the switch.

Re: 86 Fiero Taillight Problem
The "Pontiac" letting on my 86 2m4 doesn't light up, it's just depressed lettering in the bumper cover. I didn't know the GT's had lighted letters. If I had to guess I'd say bulbs or a bad wire.

Re: 86 Fiero Taillight Problem
IF it is a GT then the pontiac on the back does light up there is 4 bulbs 2 for each taillight and it should come on when you turn the key on i am about to hook mine into a switch because i like to do a lil street racing and its kinda hard to hide from the cops when you have this big PONTIAC lit up on the back of your car

Re: 86 Fiero Taillight Problem
It depends on where your backup light switch is located. Some are on the shifter while others are on the tranny. If it's on the shifter, you need to pull out both ashtrays, remove the 4 (2 per side) 7mm screws beaneath them, unscrew the shift knob and remove the console. there are 3 7mm screws holding on the power window switch plate (just a blackout plate if you have crank windows) and under this plate you'll find a small switch mounted to the right. It's adjustable - by moving the 2 nuts on the shaft you can move the plunger closer or farther away from the shift lever. In your case you want it closer. Reassemble and drive happy.
** I'm assuming the 4 speeds are the same as the getrag 5 speeds rather then the izuzu 5 speeds - Should there be no switch under the console then it's on the tranny (similar to the izuzu) you'll need to locate it and replace it - they can't be adjusted. *** The entire problem CAN be caused by sloppy shift cables. If the shifter flops around and feels loose and gears are hard to find, you may need to tighten the cables.
