1980 450sl smell battery acid

I'm smelling battery acid when I drive- battery is in trunk, pulled off top of battery to expose the cells. (Diehard maintenance free, dont know the age but it looks only a few years old). I see liquid on top of battery near the cell holes. Is the battery bad or is it being overcharged?
