Aluminum shrouds and skid plates.

I wanna know how I could make shrouds and under carriage air blocks because a couple years ago mine got smashed out. I also want some skid plates for the low part of my under cariage what type of plate to i use for these aplications? If it sounds dumb disregard this just something i been thinking about.

Re: Aluminum shrouds and skid plates.

under carriage air routes or blocks to smooth out my aero dynamics from the underbody instead of having rough portions that stick out enough to cup air and make it ride rough on the high way. I didnt say cabin , i said undercariage.

Re: Aluminum shrouds and skid plates.

damn, When I read that last night, It sounded completely differnt. You could use aluminum, but when rocks hit it it would be rather lould. I would try to find some plastic like the originals were made of, but that might be kinda hard. Hell go to the junk yards and find some, might prove easyer. As for the skid plates I'd recomend some 14g alumium sheet.

I think 14g aluminum would be a little on the light duty side for skidplates, it's only 5/64ths thick!

I don't know if I'd make a skidplate out of aluminum, stainless steel would be my preferred metal, because it's that much tougher. Depending on what you're doing, reinforced 11 guage might work, for light duty street use, just in case you run over something, or dip too low on a speedbump. I'd want to go with 1/4" plate myself, even on the street. If it's going to be a skidplate, it might as well be beefy enough to get the job done

I dont think hes bottoming out alot with that pontiac. by the way is that 3.1 liter or 3.8? I love the 3800's, awsome motors. Expecially the series II and III, first gen didnt impress me much.

Re: Aluminum shrouds and skid plates.

Thanks all , 3.4 (3400) v6 , Im wanting to replace the shrouds cus mine got obliterated from a really big rock at 60mph it hit and bounced so hard that it knocked my muffler off the brackets , the skid plates if made from heavy duty material will take a hit like that instead of shattering like it did. I just wasnt sure if the sheet metal or aluminum was a good idea cus I aint never seen it done before oh and plus im cheap. Could I also catch hell if the cops noticed it?

Re: Aluminum shrouds and skid plates.

Im quoting Silent Chamber "when rocks hit aluminum its real loud" good I love road noise infact I removed the carpets from my car almost 2 years ago as a suggestion from my doctor about allergies with the carpet out you hear the air moving under as well as around the car you can hear the pressure increase in the exhaust as I step on it too. My car is far beyond from bien silent , theres no way to have it running quietly , I got ported intakes and a straight piped Blue bottle exhaust and no cat no resonator since I had to replace the exhaust system it has created a drag spot on my rear bumper (the OEM muffler was aerodynamic) the front bumper has a sheet of plastic that made it aerodynamic underneath and was destroyed by the rock the rock bounced and rolled under the car after smashing out that piece it bouced hit the muffler and knocked it off the hinges and I ended up draging it all the way to the farm. the pipe bent and the muffler tips were warped after the rocks assault so I had to remove it with a hack saw. I ran into another stock muffler , could I gut it out for free flow and use it for the aero dynamics or should I stick it out with the bottle cannons and make my own aerodynamics for the rear bumper? Found my front fender well shrouds from a f-350 that has the rear plastic wheel well plastic rock gaurds removed for warranty , the plastic is just over sized and can be cut and fit in the well of my ga. I still got the front and rear to fix so I got less drag. I hope that gives a bit better description.
