Lightbulb 3400 out of 01 monte carlo

are thes engines able to bolt up to a fiero 5 speed and if they can what do you have to do to it to make it a viable engine that responds to the ecm correctly

Re: 3400 out of 01 monte carlo

It bolts up fine but that 3400 will never run 100% perfectly. OBD II computer systems are very specific to the cars they were installed in and once moved into a different vehicle of a different design they get confused and start to act up. Also that engine can't be used without the electronic controlled tranny in the monte carlo. It'll RUN, but not well enough to drive.

Why is it I see so many "Proud to be an American" bumper stickers on the backs of cars made in Japan or Korea??????

Re: 3400 out of 01 monte carlo

i was just thinking that this engine was easier to find than the camaro 3.4 with low miles. Is it viable to install the top end of my 2.8 including manifold on a 3400 with also the fiero distributor? kind of turning back the block, i mean clock about almost 20 years. to give you a little more information i have a 85 gt with 2.8 5 speed the engine was told to me to be trash.

Re: 3400 out of 01 monte carlo

Yes. You need to swap the cylinder heads (they're different - GM changed the location of the ports when they switched to aluminum heads) from the Fiero, use the Fiero intake manifold, plenum, and fuel injection array, pull the "dummy plug" out of the distributor hole and pop a distributor in, and viola! you've just created a 3.4 MFI. Since it's basically a bored out stroked 2.8 using the original fuel injection system, the Fiero ECM will run things just fine. More good news: the 3400 has a roller cam!!!!! Bad news: the 3400 has really nice needle bearing rocker arms that DON'T fit on the 2.8 heads. Better news: to use the upgraded rocker arms all you need is to have a machinist cut slots in the rocker arm mounting blocks of the 2.8 heads to fit the key in the bottom of the 3400 rocker arm studs. Just a side note, the 2.8/3400 hybrids produce less horsepower and torque then a 3400 because Multiport Fuel Injection isn't as efficient as Sequential Fuel Injection. Still, it'll run circles around a stock 2.8.

Re: 3400 out of 01 monte carlo

this sounds like an easier upgrade than trying to stuff a 3800 sc into it. I realize the 3800 needs a special flywheel and the computer is obII. the salvage yards just snip the wires and dont care about the ecm. Is there an allturnative that makes this an easy swap. I have access to both these engines under 850 bucks. Your information is invaluable

Re: 3400 out of 01 monte carlo

The 3800 series II was never available (as much as I know - someone told me about a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Special Edition with a Munsi 6 speed but I haven't seen any proof it exists) with a manual transmission, and most of the available flywheels/clutches are racing components and just not a good idea for street use. Also, the 90 degree v6 block saw a crankshaft change in the mid eighties - most of the available flywheels fit the old crank, not the new one. The flywheel mounts on the 2 cranks are nowhere near alike in any way.
In any case, unless there IS a 3800 II out there with a manual tranny, you're stuck using the electronic shifted automatic tranny. And trust me, it still. isn't gonna to run properly.

You could use a 94 - older 3800 SC but you're still stuck with an automatic because of the lack of a good clutch for the 3800.

You CAN build your 3400/2.8 hybrid AND supercharge it! Here's a link to the website of a guy who did:
