can i take drive shaft off and drive it front wheel?

i just crawled out from under my 91 awd tt. i believe ive found the source of the wicked vibration under moderate to heavy accelleration.
my 3 piece drive shaft going to the rear axle is held up by 2 bearing insulators and i can lift the shaft up over 1/2" at each of them. i have 2 questions.

1. how much play if any should there be?
2. If this is the problem, will i be able to drive the car without the rear drive shafts since ill have to take them off anyway to replace the bearing insulators?

if you take the driveshaft off you will fry the VCU the first time you drive it. So in short, no do not drive your car with the driveshaft off.
