94 Regal Electrical Problems

We just picked up a 94 Regal and it is having a few little quirks. On the way home from picking it up we stopped to get some items to service it and put them in the trunk. When we got home the trunk release in the glove box would not open the trunk. So we put the key in and the lock would not turn. So we took the seat out and got the stuff out of the trunk after checking the fuses, and they all looked great. I checked out the lock mechanism and it looks brand new. Then when we drove it the next day and the cruise control stopped working and then the trunk button started working. The next day the ABS brake light came on and the brake lights and turn signals stopped working. So we parked it because you can't drive w/o brake lights, the trunk release still works but the key lock still will not turn. When we got it the keyless entry would not work so we bought some new batteries for it but it did not make any difference with it. I just read a thread about the receiver for the keyless entry and will try that next. I also read something about the turnsignal switch making the brake lights act up. Does any one have any other ideas on the other items. It is my sons first car and I want to make it correct before he drives it.

Regarding your trunk latch - if the glove box button causes the solonoid to cycle then probably the remote entry receiver (that part of it anyway) is ok and there must be a lock problem - especially if the key won't operate it. Other remote keyless entry problems could be the receiver (see my older post on this) but try reprogramming the transmitters first - especially after replacing the batteries.

As far as the brake lights go - I had a very similar problem. The upper deck light was ok but the lower brake lights were out. Turned out to be the turn signal switch in the steering column. Cost about $75 for the switch and about $200 in labor. This might also be the cause of the other electrical mysteries.

My cruise control also went out some time later and I suspect it is the the activate switch on that same multi-function column array but haven't tried to get it fixed yet.

Good luck on your repairs. BTW - I always considered the Buick Regal to be an "older person's" model - wouldn't your son rather have a sportier first car
