2000 honda accord ex check engine light

I need help someone please!

My car seem rough as it was changing gears, its an automatic. When I got onto the freeway and hit about 60mph, the check engine light turned on and it was at a very high rpm. Also on the panel where it has the gears, drive(d4) was blinking. I stopped the car, decided to take the back roads home, and driving at 45 mph the rpm was between 3,000 to 4,000. I dont know much about cars... any suggestions on what might be the problem(s). Car has bout 83,000 and is a 4 cyl. Thanks.

Re: 2000 honda accord ex check engine light

blinking D4 is indication of problem with transmission.
check ATF level.
if color of fluid is brown and not pinkish you have problem with transmission.
if fluild smells burned you have problem with transmission.

before you you do any thing drastic, change ATF and see if that helps.

thanx for the help!!!

my atf is brown.. but its not too dark. I have a friend of a friend who has the same exact car/model as mine who also had tranny problems, and told me he took it into honda. They told him many of the 2000 honda accords had tranny problems and were being recalled. He get a rent a car and they replaced it for free. I looked online and found a few articles on the recall... so do u think i have the same problem? I must be late on the info. but if anyone has or had the same problem let me know. thanks!

Re: 2000 honda accord ex check engine light

there is a recall. i believe 98-01 or 02 the tranny is recalled. they say there is a workmanship defect that may be causing the erractic shifting. give your local honda service center a call and give them your vin# to see if that recall applies to your car and see what is the time & milage warranty extension the recall covers. b/c if you are out of the time frame and milage of that recall...you will be paying out of pocket.
