Re: ran out of gas...and now
It is possible, the pump is cooled by fuel, no fuel overheat?

Re: ran out of gas...and now
After 112K who knows how much crud in the fuel tank was pumped thru the lines, could be a host of issues.
Pump Filter Clogged Lines FPR Injectors. Once (and if) you get it started (I'm sure you will) get a fuel line conditioning.

Re: ran out of gas...and now
Sorry to hear the bad news. Hopefully this will clear up for soon. Is it possible to fill up the tank with some gas and add a fuel cleaner. Maybe this will help. If not, it sounds like you have a clogged filter or clogged line.

Re: ran out of gas...and now
yeah, thats the easiest to start, then look at getting some injector cleaning and that fuel line condtioning. If that doesnt do it, then its kinda downhill from there. Pump, lines and injectors...eesh.
I hope it works out for you.

The question was essentially, "where do I begin to diagnose the problem".
You need to determine, as suggested earlier, if the fuel pump is operational. As novices, the easiest way to do this is to sit in the driver's seat, place the key in the ignition, close the door, make sure the radio is off and it's as quiet as possible. Then, turn the ignition key from the LOCK position to the RUN position (DO NOT CRANK ENGINE). As you move the key from LOCK to RUN listen for the fuel pump "hummm" as it pressurizes the fuel system. You will hear this for at most 5 seconds or so and then you will hear the click of the relay-switch as the fuel pump is shut off. If you hear the "hummm" of the fuel pump there is a good chance that it is working and so you can move forward from the fuel tank. (By the way, when I start any of my FI vehicles I always move the key to the RUN position, wait for the fuel pump to pressurize and shut off, prior to cranking. My rationale: this ensures good fuel rail pressure and easier start.) Several folks have made suggestions about the possible problems moving from the fuel pump forward. It may make sense to check the fuel pressure (you will need a fuel pressure guage) at the fuel rail. This may help you to determine if there is sufficient pressure at the fuel rail or if there is a blockage (fuel filter) in the line. NOTE, GASOLINE IS A HIGHLY VOLATILE SUBSTANCE. GM HAS SPECIFIC GUIDELINES IN THEIR SERVICE MANUALS FOR WORKING ON/WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM. THESE PROCEDURES SHOULD BE FOLLOWED EXPLICITLY. GASOLINE CAN IGNITE AND BURN CAUSING DAMAGE, INJURY, AND DEATH. EXTREME CAUTION SHOULD BE USED WHEN WORKING ON YOUR AUTOMOMBILE'S FUEL SYSTEM! IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT YOUR SKILLS OR THE HANDLING OF THE FUELS DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS WORK YOURSELF. |

Re: ran out of gas...and now
So no smoking when you get some poeple to push the back up on a curb so you can crawl under it and pop the fuel filter out and spray gas all over creation, OK?
And no, I'VE never done this- why do you ask? Careful when you wash your flannel shirt up afterwards too

Re: ran out of gas...and now
for me it was the fuel pump that finally failed last week after a number of months of hard starts (had to crank 3 or 4 times when cold before it would catch).
Of course it had to happen when I was 500 miles from home on a Saturday - try to find an Aurora fuel pump in a strange town on a Sat. afternoon... These cars are fun! Starts great now though... |
