Squeaking Help

This is probably a common thing, but whenever I turn my car on there is a very loud and long squeak. I thought it was my air conditioner because when I turn that on it squeaks, but it also happens when I turn my lights on and when i brake. It also happens when im just sitting there in park. I got this spray called Belt Dressing and sprayed it on and it didnt fix it at all. Any suggestions on what to do. Thanks

Re: Squeaking Help

Check all your pullies. Make sure none of them are warped or loose.

Re: Squeaking Help

What belt did you spray the dressing onto?

Might be the alternator belt

Re: Squeaking Help

Mine does it when it is colder out and it is the power steering belt.... your description is almost identical to mine... when I start my car the power steering pulley seems to lag a little.... new pump installed not too long ago...
I've tried to tighten the belt which is NEW and I just assumed that the belt is stretching a little...
I've been wondering if my alternator might be getting weak and close to replacement....130,000 on original alt...yah might be time

Re: Squeaking Help

You may need to play with the adjuster bolt(s) on your power equipment to adjust belt tension. If it sounds like a squealing belt, this is probably all you need to do to fix it. If it persists, you may need to put on one or more new belts
if they are not holding onto the pullies properly.

Re: Squeaking Help

sqeaky belts are a very common DSM problem, just about every DSM i roll around with the belts sqweak when they turn em on(including my own)

best fix is tighten it up good but make sure you dont overtighten it.. we did that to a friends DSM and he busted his alternator belt

Re: Squeaking Help

that sounds like a belt not tightened enough. i tighten my belts so that i can take and turn it so its vertical with my hand but not past vertical, then you know it's the right tightness.

Re: Squeaking Help

my 4G64 sqeaked all the time, even after we changed all the belts, pulleys and tensioners.... it doesnt hurt the car if your worried about that, but it is embarassing and annoying.

Re: Squeaking Help

I have been a Mechanic mt entire life although DSM's are fairly new to me (I have always worked for the Sheriff's Dept. so Crown Vic's I know well) and i have yet to see Belt dressing do anything but cost money my suggestion would be to check all your belts especially power steering and replace were needed

Re: Squeaking Help

I dunno about that the belt dressing I have works quite well. Although it wears out quickly and the noise is back
