Transmittion Filter Replacement
I plan on replacing the trans filter and was wondering what degree of difficulty I can expect, and approximately how long will take?

Re: Transmittion Filter Replacement
just changing the transmission oil and filter is a little more complicated than engine oil change because the transmission lacks a drain plug.
Plan a "relaxing" afternoon to do the job if you haven't done it before. You will need to remove all the pan bolts except 2 on opposite corners of the pan. loosen the last 2 bolts about 1 turn and work the pan loose from the stuck gasket. have a large (read this BIG) pan ready to catch the oil as it is easy to have the oil all over the place. one thing I recommend is to adjust the rear band (If there is one) when the pan is off. Of course, if you don't have the special tools and don't feel good about getting it right, just change the oil and filter leaving the adjustment till you can take it to a shop. JD |

Re: Transmittion Filter Replacement
When you say "adjust the rear band" what do you mean? Tighten it? What about the throttle valve adjustment?

Re: Transmittion Filter Replacement
Band adjustments require a very specific torque to set the clearance between the band and the drum. This affects shift quality and the adjustment will deteriorate with use over time.
this setting is not something to be guessed at and say it's good enough. you need a click type inch/lb torque wrench and the specifications for the specific transmission in your vehicle as each model has a slightly different method for the adjustment. The throttle cable is usually adjusted from the engine end and can be done anytime. JD |

O.K. I replaced the transmission filter and adjusted the Throttle cable from the engine side. Not much help. It does shift firmer but still wants to stay in the lower gear. When you go WOT and floor it it shifts just fine. I think.
