Cracked Tein sleeve

Hey all I just had a question about my suspension. I have the Tein SS kit and while I was driving yesterday I hit a massive pot hole, to the outcome of hearing this loud scrapping, clicking noise. I pulled over and saw my sleeve was crushed and cracked (left rear). Is this a BIG problem? Can that be replaced without replacing the whole setup?
Thanks for any help on this.

Sleeve? What do you mean. Teins AREN'T sleeve type coilovers, are you refering to the perch collars that you turn with the special wrench to raise and lower the car? I have the SS kit on my Civic so I might be able to help you figure this out, I just need to know what the "sleeve" is that you're talking about.

In any event, I'd call up Tein USA www.tein.com and tell them your dilema. I know shock overhaul costs $75 and custom revalving is $100 per shock, but I'm uncertain how much a complete replacement unit is.

Re: Cracked Tein sleeve

Thanks I am not sure exactly what it is I know teins are not sleeve coilovers. The piece that broke is black plastic that is located at the top of the shock and the spring is surrounding it. I believe it protects somthing ( left rear). Thats the piece that cracked and is making the noise. I also did email tein about the issue. I am sorry I am not detailing this properly I could take a pic If you'd like. but just go take a look at yours you'll see the black plastic at the top - Thanks man!!

I'm still unsure of what you're talking about, mine don't have any black plastic piece at the top of them (I'm looking at my installation and parts manual for my SS coilovers). Wait, I think I know (though if you could take a picture, that would help GREATLY) but the piece you're talking about is part of your CAR since it's not listing with the parts that come with the kit. So if Tein can't help you, you might need to talk to the local dealership, findout what the part is and how bad it being broken is for things. Yeah, this piece is what keeps the spring of your suspension in place, for whatever spring/shock you use. It's NOT part of your Tein kit though.

Re: Cracked Tein sleeve

Alright they just responded back with a diagram of the rear set up with the piece I had explained in question. The piece that is circled is the DUST COVER. Which dosnt seem to be that a big of a deal. I emailed them back asking about replacments and how to go about this.

response:

Brody,
Truthfully it is not that big of a deal but in certain cases it can save
your piston shaft from getting scratched. A scratch on your piston shaft if
certain doom for the damper. If you did want to order the part just contact
your local Authorized Dealer and ask for the part they will contact us for
ordering.
Best regards,
Sales

So the cracked boot was making noise? Interesting...

Anyways, not a big deal to replace, shouldn't be more than $30 I'd imagine, and it really should be less, like $15 or something, but I dunno. I would DEFINITELY get a new one though, like they said in the email back to you, not having the shock piston protected, could result in it getting scored or scratched from sand and dust which can damage the oil seal in the shock which can in turn allow the oil inside to leak out and make the dampner fail and work any more. This really holds true for any shock/strut unit, not just Teins. Glad you got it figured out though.
