3.4L engines Experiences please?

Looking to get a 95 Monte Z34 SS w/3.4L. Your experiences the engine good and bad would be appreciated, please?

Good cars with lots of power.
But as a GM tech, I wouldn't own one (a 3.4) if you gave it to me and paid for it.
Timing belt is a PIA to replace
Hide and go seek Alternator

From what I can gather, the '95 and earlier versions were okay, not great, but OK. Because of OBD II, introduced in the '96s (and I had one of the first), things for that model year were awful. My engine lasted only 10.7K miles (after 2 PCM failures and then a stuck cam), and as a result the trannie was on the way out when I ditched the car (before the engine swap). '97s were a tad better, but more trouble-prone than the '95 and earlier ones.

Bottom line is that it was a pretty sorry experiment on GMs part.

A good word about the 97 3.4

I have a 97 Z34 3.4L DOHC with 214,000 miles on the original engine. It's still going strong!

I have a 95 z34 3.4L dohc that had a cracked block and ran from about 67,000 miles on it, including bracket racing at a drag strip it pulled 11.2 sec in an 1/8 mile consistently I can not speak highly enough about this car and engine.
