For the brake of McLarenF1...

I got two questions about the brake system of McLarenF1.
I know that porsche carrera GT has a ceramic composite brake disk.
And F1 machine has a carbon-carbon composite brake disk.
What kind of brake disk is used for McLarenF1?
Actually the ceramic composite brake is developed recently.
I don't think F1 has it. Am I right?

And Which kind of brake pad is used?
I've heard Carbon/Kevlar brake pad is popular for tunining cars.

The brakes found on the F1 are pretty much standard issue for a supercar from that area, save for the monoblock caliper that Brembo developed.

Gordon Murray wanted to add carbon rotors and brake pads to the F1 and McLaren Cars apparently spent quite a bit of time testing them, but their performance at low speeds and when cold was not acceptable for road car use. Developing road-usable carbon rotors and pads was still about a decade away at the time. It would have been awesome if McLaren Cars could have found a way to make it work and then the F1 would have been the first production car to wear them, but it wasn't meant to be.

Remember Tiff's words in "greatest cars"!
"Some may say the brakes ain't good enough, but that's rubbish"

It's a perfect car in any aspect and so well balanced technology.
The only ones that would be able to make a better overall car is McLaren themself I think!

Here's a pic that shows that the F1 did have carbon discs and rotors for LeMans. That's the only way to get anywhere near this much brake dust.

The road cars do have a more standard brake package with iron rotors.

Re: For the brake of McLarenF1...

sorry, my bad. Upon closer inspection, it is mud. I can't find any pics/docs showing it, but I was pretty sure that at one point they did have carbon-carbon brakes, at least for some races.

It's no surprise or secret that the GTRs had carbon brakes - though I'm not sure they were used at every venue. I'm sure I even have some photos of them on the car with the wheels off. I'll have to look later.

I dug through the archive real quickly and found a found a few shots that show the carbon rotors fitted to the GTRs. I believe that these were only used at LeMans in 1995 & 1996 not the other races from those years, but I could be wrong on that. I'll have to do some more reading or maybe someone else can confirm. I'm not intimately familiar with all the rules of the different sanctioning bodies from that era.

This is the Franck Muller Watches-liveried GTR #11R - not an LM btw.

Even though the LM was based on the GTRs, the LMs still used steel rotors like the F1 road car.

Re: For the brake of McLarenF1...

Thanks, I feel better now that I know I hadn't been imagining things.

On the varying sanctioning bodies, during the era when they were running, the rules changed so much year to year and varied between sanctioning bodies enough that it would be difficult to find all the places where they could and could not use carbon rotors.
