evaporator cannister /gas tank
My "service engine" light went on and I was told by the dealer tech that I needed an evaporator canister because it was leaking. I think the code was "PO 440". I had that done for $332 and was told that now the fuel tank needed replacing because that wasn't holding pressure either. He stated that the part that needed replacing "valve or ring?" was built inside the fuel tank and that was why the whole tank needed replacing. This is now going to cost $649. I asked that what if he replaces that and the "check engine" light still remains on, what then. He assure me that the gas tank replacement would definatly take care of it. Its a 2001 Maxima with 55K and runs mint with no problems other then the check engine light being on and the fact that the car also failed the inspection sticker test due to the light. My question is what is the likelyhood that both the "evaporator canister and the fuel tank" are bad at the same time. Am I being taken for a ride by the dealer and tech. The tech insisted he independently tested the canister and it did leak. He said the the "smoke " test would leak from the biggest hole first which in this case was the canister and thats why the leak didnt initially show up in the gas tank, in which the leak didnt show up until the canister was replaced. Thank you for any help you can give...
