Re: q about passing smog in california..

As long as the engine is of the year of the car or older AND maintains all factory emissions systems (IE OBD Systems), it should pass smog. My point is, if it passed in the other car, it should pass in yours.

this is for rice rocketeer or any1 who done swaps. i drive a 95 cvcc vx. I was planning on swaping to si/ex motor or a ls integra motor into my ride. My mechanic said to me i couldnt cuz on my intake manifold has a egr valve on it, And when i swaped out the motor and intake there will not be one on. if i have all the the smog equipment from the old car/engine will it pass smog in my car. second question if i use an older engine how would the smog people find out that particular engine is not the same year or newer then my car..and how about japanese engines can i use does engines in my car. is there any way i can get around it

The Vx is a litte different. Making an ULEV vehicle into a street racer is a little harder than the usual. As for your EGR valve, I believe all honda engines have them. And if the motor didn't come with it, Then it doesn't need it to pass inspection. They're not gonna outlaw it totally. They can't expect a 16 valve 1.8 liter to have the same emmissions as 8 valve 1.5 liter.

As for how they find out what year, the VIN number is etched on the engne in various places. In cali they make you ride with the motor papers in hand. And if you can't supply credentials, they impound the car.

Yes you can use JDM engines, as long as they pass US emmisions. It isn't that hard considering japanese emmissions guidelines are about 3 times stricter than cali ones.

Just keep all papers, do a nice tune up on the engine and get a new stock cat of the same type as the engine you get, and don't fool with any emmisions or engine electrical systems (IE Don't get a straight pipe or do OBD changeovers) and you'll be fine.

Dude I just said, it's not illegal. Do you really think in california, the mecca of the import craze, engine swapping would be illegal. Like I said, They CAN'T expect your GSR to have the same emmissions as your ULEV Vx engine. It just won't happen without some major power reducing modifications. Reread what I said in the earlier post.
