1988 Camry LE O2 Sensor-HELP! HElp!

I am going to try this agaiin. For some reason, it did not post yesterday.

I have a 1988 Camry LE 4 cyl. Every year it fails the emissions test and every year I am told that I need an O2 sensor. I am tired of paying enormous amounts for a passing emissions test only to have the check engine light remain on. My brother and I learned how to do the test and the code is 21 which is the O2 sensor. Question: How many O2 sensors are on this car. I know about the one that's near the engine. Is there another one?

I am so tired of paying for something I am not getting. It is my belief that they are using someone else's car to pass my car for inspection. I need to get the car inspected tomorrow. I almost got a ticket today because I didn't have a sticker. I was saved because I had paid for the tag. Thank you so much.

BEE JAY.

Re: 1988 Camry LE O2 Sensor-HELP! HElp!

There is only one O2 sensor - The one you saw. The exception is some California cars have a second sensor. It's easy to check, just follow the exhaust system to the muffler. If you haven't found another sensor, it doesn't have one.

Since you are getting repetitive error codes for the O2 sensor, check the connector and wires going to it. There is a reasonable chance they are the problem and not the sensor.

BTW, since you didn't say so, have you replaced the O2 sensor to see if it was the problem?

Hi Brian, Thanks for responding. Yes, we have replaced it and so have a couple of dealers. They give me a paper showing that the car passed but I think they did something else. When we changed the sensor, the same thing happened as when we passed emission at the dealer and the next year had the same problem.

We are going to take your suggestion about the wires leading to the sensor. I love this car and want to keep it. Thanks.

Are you saying that the dealer did the emission test for you and each time you went back for the test they charged you the O2 sensor to have your car passed? Hmm, I would be very suspecious about this.

Did you see the report? What items failed your vehicle? NOx, CO, or what? Different exhaust is caused by different failed parts. The O2 sensors normally last long. Any repair manual should tell you how to test it. If it tests good, then it could be the wiring so the signal can't reach the computer.

Don't let the dealer dragging you around or you will become their gold mine.
