Hi there,
I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Its has 200,000 miles on it. My steering is very loose and sloppy. Im assuming the power steering pump is fine as the steering wheel turns either way without much effort. I hoisted the front end and wiggled both front wheels. No play there so I think the wheel bearings are fine. I replaced the steering dampner. That helped a bit but still very loose and sloppy. Im thinking now it might be the steering gear box. How do I determine if it is in fact the steering gear box? If it is do I need to replace or rebuild it or can I just adjust it? Also is there anything else I should be looking at? Has anyone else experienced the same problem Im having? Thanks. Al |

Re: Steering - Loose / Sloppy / Lots of Play
I had the same problem and just learned how to fix it.
It really worked! Vehicle is on the ground. Don't lock steering wheel. Have wheels straight as possible. Remove locking nut (it's on a set screw) on steering gear (right on top),this will clean up the threads. Insert an allen wrench and turn clockwise (*Don't crank on it*) until it stops. Reinstall locking nut. Start and turn steering wheel left and right all the way about four or five times. You may have to repeat the whole procedure about two or three times. This adjustment takes up for worn stuff inside. If you have no threads showing above the locking nut you may not be able to adjust it anymore. Good luck!! |
