How to get codes

my SES light came on intermitantly for a while and now has been on solid for over a week; however nothing is wrong with the engine that i can notice. i understand that there is a way to get codes from the diagnostic port by checking the number of times the light flashes and at what pace. does any one know for sure how this is done??

You mean 95 or older you can ground the A and B. 96 and newer require a scanner or a code reader.
