This is an interesting thread, and a fine example of revisionist history, that is, applying our modern standards of morals, law and human rights to historical events.
Those decades of colonization occured in a world where mass slavery was legal even in many 'civilized' nations, women were not people under that law, and the judicial system would imprison /execute people for relatively minor offences. There was no such thing as human rights or international law as we know it at all. Therefore, at the time, Eurpoeans felt they were perfectly justified to subjigate another civilization. Also, record suggest that the native americans at the time did not have a sense of land ownership, nor a concept of 'nation' as the Eurpoeans understand it. I suspect this made it easier for the Europeans to invade, although the results would have been the same, regardless. I am not saying what they did was right, but to them, it seemed right at the time, for understandable reasons. Now, I would like to know where the Jews fit in? I will venture this topic: The Jews, with United Nations consent, in 1949, did the same thing to the Palestinians with the creation of the state of Israel, as the European settlers dod to the native Americans - displaced them from their homeland they have had for thousands of years. This is not necessarily my opinion, but is exactly how millions of Palestinians feel, and is a justifiable viewpoint. |

The Europeans did what they did for economic reasons (they wanted the land and resources) and political reasons (if we don't colonise it, the other Europeans, (Spanish, French, English, Portuguese, Dutch etc) will. The native Americans just happened to be in the way. They were not a concern, and were often recruited to further the Europeans goals, either through slavery (Spanish in South America) of through trading (especially the fur trade in North America.) Hitler specifically targeted a race/culture for genocide for sociological and political reasons. Their removal from the face of the earth ws his 'final solution' (to use his words) |
