Replacing a 93 Camry A/C compressor
The A/C in my 1993 Toyota Camry (3.0L V6) doesn't work. I thought it might need recharging so I went to my local mechanic to charge it up and convert it so that it could use R134A instead of R12. I also asked the mechanic to check out the A/C system before charging it so any mechanical problems or leaks could be detected.
The mechanic converted the system to R134A (I think he replaced a valve and changed the oil), charged the system w/ R134A and added dye to the system. He reported back that there wasn't any leak detected (he also mentioned that it held a vacuum for 1/2 hour) and returned the car to me. Just before handing the keys to me he said that "my compressor was weak and that is why it won't get that cool while idling, but will get cold when you start driving"! At idle, my vent temperature is a balmy 68 degrees and doesn't get much colder when not idling. I returned the car to him to fix it and he told me the compressor was in fact the problem. He then gave me a huge estimate to repair it (he'll work with me on the labor, but the compressor costs big $$$). I can't afford a new compressor (even the rebuilt ones are a bit pricey). I noticed that there are used and remanufactured compressors being sold on the Internet (mostly for 94-01 Camrys). I found a very low cost compressor being auctioned, but it is for a 1994 Camry 3.0L V6 engine. The description shows that it is a 10PA17C compressor with OEM number 447200-3573. Now for the question... Will this compressor work with my 1993 Camry? Are there any other parts that should be replaced along with the compressor? Thanks for any help you can give me. |

Re: Replacing a 93 Camry A/C compressor
www.rockauto.com, check if the part number is the same.
Try junk yard. I got one there for $50. Does the Idle Up work fine? It may not be your compressor. Pin point the problem before spend any money. I convert AC on my Camry and it works fine when driving, but not when idling. The problem is the Idle Up, not the compressor. |

Re: Replacing a 93 Camry A/C compressor
Thanks for the tip about checking the part number w/ rockauto. Unfortunately, they only have an AC Delco part number, not the original Denso number.
I don't know much about car repair, so please forgive my ignorance, but how do I check the Idle Up? |
