Re: Help!!...'85 Camry won't start
Ok, there is a strong spark at each plug, you said there is good compression all the way across. The timing belt must not have jumped (or a slight jump only) if you have compression across the board as you say. This should at least be enough to get it to cough or want to start. Since you bought the car this way it is hard to say what they did or if they worked on it and messed with the timing of the distributor. You mentioned much gas on the plugs and you squirted more in the plug holes.. here is what I would do, re-verify the plugs are abosolutely clean.. I would replace them with new plugs.. again. Autolites are about a $1 each.. and are a great plug, even if you already did change them before lets change them and re-gap to spec again, just to be sure they are not gas fouled - at all, trust me this could keep it from starting or sometimes even coughing if they are fouled at all. What I think is happening is the plugs are wet enough they are grounding out all the spark, so there is no spark at the spark plug electrodes - that is why you dont even get a cough or sputter.
I suspect the injectors are functioning since you have so much fuel in the plugs. I think that it is flooded.. after you change the plugs again hook everything up and try starting again with your foot holding the accelerator all the way to the floor, keep it held to the floor for quite a while without pumping it.. just hold it to the floor the whole time.. what this will do is to clear out any excess gas that might be causing the flooding. Keep cranking it, let the starter cool for a couple of minutes if it does not start right away. Also before you try to crank it, lets charge the battery up all the way so we get a good solid crank. Lets try this and post back the results.. and we will go from there. I think there is a good chance if you follow these steps it will start though.
