Yes, it is, which is why it makes no sense to say that the Ecotec killed the Cavalier, which is what its sounding like. If length of service is the measuring stick, then the old 85 horsepower 2.0 and (and then later the 2.2) are better engines than the LD9, since they were in the car since it came out in 1982.

i never said it killed it, its a good engine, but in my opinion the 2.4 twin cam was the better, i dont doubt the power of the ecotec.

Re: ecotec or twin cam?

OK then. I'm not arguing either engine is better. I'm just saying you can't judge by length of service in the Cavalier. The J-body was due for replacement. It's likely the Ecotec will be used in GM vehicles longer than the LD9. They already have been using variants of the Eco in Europe in Saabs and Opels, etc.

wow...... very defensive thread we have here. What do those eco's run stock? I know they have less HP and torque than our Z engines - but from what you guys say the ecos are faster? I know i've raced the new eco's in my cavy and they are fast, but I'm always ahead of them. From off the line the Z dominates - but the eco usually catches up but never passes. Thats just my experience with it. Enlighten me.

Re: ecotec or twin cam?

Go to the org, search for Ecotec vs. TwinCam, this is another issue that has been beat to death, like the VSS mod. Obviously, they're pretty even, as many arguments as people make in defense of both engines. I don't know why people have to fight about which is better. Who cares. Buy and drive the one you like better. I guess people get tired of saying their Cavalier is better than a Civic, now we have to fight among ourselves about which engine in the Cavalier is better.
