86 Camry wiper fluid button spring replacement

Help! Instructions needed to replace the spring that helps actuate the wiper fluid button of my newly purchased 1986 TOY Camry Deluxe.

The previous owner gave me the spring and said that it needed to be inserted behind the button. The button is located at the end of the cruise control/windshield wiper lever, which is attached to the right side of the steering column near the ignition key assembly.

I wanted to pop the cruise control assembly off the lever to insert the spring, however, I don't want to damage the cruise control. I don't even know if the cruise control assembly pops off. Does anyone know how to do this? (I don't want to spend the money on buying a Chilton's manual to do this task.)
