3000GT vs. 97 Prelude SH

Hey guys,

I am selling my 96 3kgt, base model which has 222 horses when it was stock. Do you guys think that the 97 SH lude would be a good replacement until i can afford a vr4? I know it has 200 hp stock and weighs almost half as much. Preformance wise though could it keep up with or beat my old car? I am not willing to go slower so i really need to know this. I havent raced one of these new ones.. i know i would rape the old ones though. I do have about 255 horses in mine now.

A 5th Gen Prelude should offer you the same, if not better performance than your Base 3000GT.

A Prelude is an excellent replacement car until you get your VR4.

My 2 cents

The Prelude is probably a little quicker than the stock '96 3000GT (because of weight). Since you have mods, I am not sure how your current car compares to a stock SH. I can tell you first hand that the Prelude is a great car though (although it cannot compare to the VR4 in terms of speed).

SH prelude is hella lot faster than ur 3000gt given its the SL not the VR4. they better be othawise why am i doin an H22 swap. i already beat 3000gts long as not VR4(sick machines btw) so yes teh prelude will be an excellent choice, and whos knos maybe ull ditch dreams of a vr4 once uve driven ur prelude for a while. but maybe not. go for it man

Actually the base 3000GT comes with only 180ish hp. The SL model gets bumped up to 222 hp. So the prelude would kill a base model and I believe would beat a SL. I've raced my friend's SL on the highway and won, though it was an automatic and I have the lighter base 5th gen prelude

He's right, the base model 3kgt actually has some dismal performance. And any h22a powered Prelude should be able to take an SL.

Re: 3000GT vs. 97 Prelude SH

my 1996 base 3000GT has 222 horsepower stock... starting in 1997 mitsubishi bumped the base 3k down to SOHC and that is the 170 horses you all are thinking about. Mine probably was around 275, i had cold air intake, downpipe, test pipe, light wieght underdrive pulley, and a short shifter. So before 97 all the 3ks were 222 horsepower.

Now onto other things i think i decided i want a 99' lude SH. Now for the warranty on these things it is 10 yr 100 thousand right? Can that transfer if i buy the car from a private party? And does that warranty cover crap like timing belt replace, water pump, clutch? does it cover labor costs as well? how much should i be paying for this car?

Re: 3000GT vs. 97 Prelude SH

well the base and sh are different in handling (SH = Super Handling) and base can also come w/ a sportshifter. H22 engines are 5th gen ludes and H23 are for 4th gens. (JDM engines) oh and the sh also comes w/ ATTS (active torque transfer system)

Re: 3000GT vs. 97 Prelude SH

i think i have decided to go with a 99 lude. It comes with the keyless entry and i can get one with less miles. How are the stock clutches on these cars? What miles have you guys had to replace them at??? anything else i should be concerned with? It would be nice if someone could tell me the repair costs they ran into in the first 110,000 miles.

Re: 3000GT vs. 97 Prelude SH

To your question earlier, the factory warranty is 3 yrs./36000. Maintenance isn't horrible on the preludes though, and you can do over half the stuff yourself. Just get a repair manual and keep up with preventative maint.
