i finally burned my piston rings!!!!
so i was getting my car tuned yesterday. its on the dyno for the first run. he floors it, and i am standing there watching the boost gauge. all of a sudden, i see it hit 15lbs. i start yelling. by the time he hears me and lets off of it, the boost gauge is over 20lbs. keep in mind that i am running a stock ls motor. then, i see smoke blowing out of that breather on the back of the valve cover. the final numbers are....287whp at 5600rpms. i wonder what it would have hit if he didn't let off the gas!!
now i have to replace the piston rings and theres no way i am going to mess with that! so instead, i am buying a gsr short block, getting it bored and sleeved. buying arias pistons and eagle rods. throwing on a b16 head. and, keeping it turboed!!! i am estimating around $3500 since i have most of the parts and i am swapping the motors myself. so i guess there is some good stuff that comes from all my misfortunes!

Re: i finally burned my piston rings!!!!
so what you're saying is, you dont have a boost gauge in your interior, which is stupid. If you did, the tuner would've obviously seen it jump to 20psi.
your fault. |

Re: i finally burned my piston rings!!!!
thats not what i am saying at all. he was watching the computer screen and i was watching the boost gauge standing next to the car. not my fault. the boost controller malfunctioned. it was an accident. thats why they call it an accident. not really anyones fault.

Re: i finally burned my piston rings!!!!
So I have a couple questions for you on this becuase I would really like to turbo my ls. Is this the firts time you had it to the dyno? Or were you ever to get it there under more... reliable... boost conditions? Supposedly 12lbs on a B18B is no biggie so what kind of hp were you getting while driving this car before the mishap? What was your boost controller set at for normal driving? How many miles did you have the turbo installed for and how many were there when you initially turboed the car? Any specific tips for someone doing what you did? Sorry for all the questions... just want to pick the brain of someone who has been there.
Thanks, DoubleTap |

so u have to pay for all the stuff yourself? the tuner's wont have to help u out in getting a new motor since they contributed in blowing the motor? u must be loaded if u can shell out cash like that, wanna pass some of that dough this way? lol, j/k.
that reminds me of my friends 2000 turbo SI. he was racing it with stock internals when the cops came. they chased him down but he got away. his boost controller wasnt working too well he was hitting 20 lbs with those high compression pistons. he was able to get away from them but he ended up blowing 2 pistons.

yeah i have to pay for all that stuff myself. and i aint mad at him. im sure he didnt do it on purpose. besides, im glad it blew on the dyno and not on the street somewhere.

Re: i finally burned my piston rings!!!!
to doubletap-
no, this is not the first time i had the car on the dyno. my stock ls was putting out 190hp to the wheels at 6lbs, 210 at 8lbs and 232 at 10lbs. i was about to have it tuned to 12lbs when my accident happened. the i always ran the car at the boost i was tuned for. i never turned it down. thats the nice thing about turbo. you dont have to turn it down. the power is there when you need it,and if you dont need it, nothing is being wasted. the car had 40k miles on it when it was turboed and now has like 60k miles.
