looked at the sticker on the drivers side door and it says that the car weighs 3450lbs or somethign like that. i tought civics were lighter than that. and where is most of this weight coming from? i have a 94 dx coupe. how much do the hatcbacks weigh compared to a coupe?

Re: civic weight

5th Gen Coupes were about 2500lbs. The hatchbacks about 2450lbs. Not much difference. No way any Civic is over 2800lbs. My 6th Gen Civic Si (coupe) is 2712lbs dry from factory.

What you saw on the sticker was the GVW, or Gross Vehiclure Weight. Anyways, that is the maximum weight the vehicle should weight, that includes vehicle, passengers, bags, etc. That's not the Vehilce curb weight, thats the maximum Gross vehiclure weight the car should weight once everyone and everything is in it. That means that the total weight of the car and everything in it should not exceed 3450 lbs (that is car + people in it +bags and luggauge, etc). Again, this does not refer to the curb weight of the vehilce, it refers to what is explained above.

The curb weight is the weight of the vehicle as you are thinking, the weight of the vehicle unloaded, just sitting there.

The curb weight of a 1994 DX Honda Civic coupe, according to edumnds.com, is 2231 lbs

A 1994 DX Hatchback is 2108lbs

Arrgh, do people no understnad? You have mixed up Gross Vehilce Weight (GVW) and Towing Capacity, 2 VERY DIFFERENT THINGS!!!! I never said it was the "towing capacity of the car." A civic has NO towing capacity. I said it was the GVW, or Gross vehicle weight. This is the MAXIMUM WEIGHT the car should weight at any given time, no more. This means that the curb weight (the weight of the car just sitting there parked) + the driver + the passengers + plus all the bags and lugguged they have should not eqaul more than 3450lbs. If it does, you have "overloaded the weight" the vehilce was designed to haul. Again, the GVW INCLUDED the curb weight, so really, that means out of the 3450lbs GVW, 2231lbs is ALWAYS taken up as the curb weight. So you can only load 1219lbs worth of people and lugguged on top of this before you risk damage to the car, the suspenion, etc. Now granted, most people would never load a civic that full. But lets say you are going on a trip with you and 4 buddies, and you all weight 200lbs. The car weighs 2231 lbs as a curb weight. Now you and your 4 buddies all weight 200 lbs, so that's 1000lbs right there. That is a total GVW of 3231 lbs for the car with you in it. You only have 219 left before you reach the MAXIMUM GVW. All the lugguge can only weight 219lbs total or you'll have overloaded the vehicle, and that's a bag thing.

Does that clear up the meaning a little better? Gross Vehilce Weight (GVW) is MUCH DIFFERENT than towing capicity. Also, GVW is the curb weight of the vehilce + all the other added weight, i.e passengers, driver, lugguged, etc. It's the TOTAL weight the car weights once everyone and all the bags are in it, etc. The MACX GVW means this weight shouldn't weight more than the listed 3450 lbs or you have overloaded the vehilce.

Damn, my sedan weighs less than your car. By about 85lbs too. I didn't think the Si's weighed that much. Makes me think twice about backing down from one of those next time...my torque advantage just might be enough to pull out a win.
